San Antonio Zoo

Yes, I'm still behind. It is the new story of my life.


Our favorite thing at the zoo was feeding nectar to the Lory birds. It was the best $2 we spent on the whole trip. At first, T.S. was not a bit interested. Then, he decided to give it a try. He was okay with it until the bird started traveling up Sadie's arm, which made his bird a little antsy. Then, he was done. The funniest thing was a bird pooped on Sadie's head--after we left the bird enclosure.

Spring break pics to come--they are still stuck in my camera. We had a ball in Magnolia with the Spivey family. Jen and I even pitched a tent all by ourselves.

The last picture is the outside of the huge granary. I had to take a picture of the "flying buttress," it reminded me of Mrs. McDowell and her teaching about cathedrals.

Mission San Jose

True to my upbringing, I made sure that we did something "educational" while we were at the stockshow. (I would argue that the stockshow is plenty educational. I could go on for hours about the exhibit barn that featured Texas products and many educational displays by the extension service; not to mentioned the Farm Bureau barn that had educational displays about the importance of agriculture. But, I won't.)

Last year, we visited the Alamo and took the riverboat tour. This year we visited Mission San Jose. We chose it because it was actually built in San Antonio. Some of the missions originated elsewhere in Texas and were moved to San Antonio for one reason or another. Mission San Jose has been restored--the church still has the original wooden doors. We also chose it because it has a restored grist mill. We actually got to see how they would have ground the wheat at the mission. It was interesting that they grew and ground wheat rather than corn.

The kids were really impressed with everything. T.S. thought the holes for guns and cannons in the walls and above the gate were very cool. Sadie was shocked that the ovens were actually outside. It took the kids awhile to figure out what the igloo-looking things were for. I was impressed with the granary as well as the carving on the church doors and the front of the church. the statues carved on the front and around the doors were used to teach the Indians about the Christian faith.

Austin

On the way to San Antonio, the kids and I detoured through Austin for a quick trip to the capitol. I was quite proud that I got us there without getting lost. The kids were very impressed with the architecture. T.S. liked the cannons out front, too.

The Sale

Here are a few picture of Sadie selling Edward at the sale. It was really cool to see her name and hometown on the big screen.

San Antonio Stockshow 2010

We left last Saturday after Sadie's Little Dribblers game. We fed Edward in Tulia before we left and stopped every couple of hours to feed and drench. These pictures are at a rest stop near Henrietta--notice the snow. It was strange seeing snow on the ground so close to Fort Worth.

We spent Saturday night with Sissy and Albert. Robby met up with the group we haul with on Sunday. They headed on down to get in line to unload Monday morning.

The kids and I enjoyed a day of shopping and playing on Sunday. (Thanks, Sissy and Albert!) We left Monday morning and made a quick detour at the capitol (pics to come).

Sadie didn't show until Wednesday which gave us plenty of time to check out exhibits and be tourists in between feeding every 2-4 hours. (pics to come)

Sadie was in the first class at 8:00 on Wednesday morning. She did an outstanding job showing and placed second. The judge even commented on her showmanship during his comments on the class.

We then had to wait ALL day to go back for the medium wool breed drive. The wait was definitely worth it. They announced each showman's name, parents, hometown and preferred college as they entered the ring. (Sadie was undecided--which was a relief to me, there's still hope for A&M!) It was incredible to watch Sadie go out there like she'd been in breed drives her whole life.

It was an amazing day.
